HELD OVER!!! Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka has extended its run, with performances at 8:00 p.m. on July 29, 30 and 31, and a 3:00 p.m. matinee on July 31!
Enter a world of pure imagination when everyone's favorite candy man throws open the gates to his chocolate factory as Workshop Theatre presents Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka July 9-24!
Author Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous chocolatier and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation that features such songs as "The Candy Man," "Pure Imagination," "Cheer Up, Charlie," "I've Got a Golden Ticket" and "I Want the World" from the classic family film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. When Wonka stages a contest by hiding five Golden Tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars, he announces that whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of chocolate. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, and together they venture into the factory to see firsthand what a tasty, tempting and surreal world Willy Wonka has created for himself.
Scott Vaughan will dazzle audiences as the very mysterious – at times questionable – and always eccentric Willy Wonka. Jacob Burger and Abby Bartman share the role of our hero, Charlie Bucket, and Lee O. Smith plays Charlie's irascible Grandpa Joe. Alternating in the roles of the "four nasty little children" are Anthony Harvey and Graycen Szalwinski as the gluttonous Augustus Gloop; Grace Fanning and Claire Pruett as the gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde; Hannah Mount and Blakelee Cannon as the spoiled Veruca Salt, with John Cooper as the technology-obsessed Mike Teevee. Jon Taylor and Laura Adair as Mr. and Mrs. Bucket, Audrey Brown as Mrs. Gloop, Shelby Sessler as Mrs. Beauregarde, Keith McAdams as Mr. Salt and Edith Stewart as Ms. Teevee join bed-ridden grandparents, townspeople, Oompa-Loompas, trained squirrels – and more! – in the 74-member cast that will leave the stage and bring Wonka magic to Workshop's courtyard and lobby before the show and during intermission.
Wonka candies (what else?) will be on sale during each performance, and every customer who buys one will have a Golden Ticket entered into a drawing for the chance to join the cast onstage during the show's finale and receive a treat from Mr. Willy Wonka himself!
Sponsored by BlueCross and BlueShield of South Carolina, Willy Wonka is directed and choreographed by Dedra Daniels Mount, with musical direction by Lou Warth. Set designer Randy Strange is bringing the "golden age of chocolate" to our stage, and Barry Sparks is creating the delicious lighting. Jimmy Mount is serving as producer, with Alexis Doktor as costumer, Gwen & Claire Pruett on props, and Pam Johnson handling graphic design.
Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka marks Workshop's return to the large-cast children's fantasy shows that were a summer tradition for the theatre during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Magic will be performed, children will inflate, shrink and float, and elevators will take flight – all before your very eyes! Get your Golden Ticket and enter a world of pure imagination in everybody's favorite non-pollutionary, anti-institutionary, pro-confectionery factory of fun!
